GATTACA Essay

Anyone and everyone has the ability to overcome great adversity. There are no genes in the human spirit. In the movie Gattaca, we get to see the differences between Vincent and Jerome, they’re unique in the way they see life and the future. Jerome is genetically engineered. he was perfect and met all the requirements to get into Gattaca. Sadly, there were some obstacles he couldn’t emotionally overcome, he dealt with addiction to alcohol, suffered from depression, and lacked desire. On the other hand, Vincent had disabilities which affected his life choices, but he was still willing to chase his dreams.
Particularly, Jerome was genetically engineered to be the perfect person. He could have technically done anything he wanted to, but he was upset over getting second place at a swim meet, this insecurity made him depressed. Due to that bad experience in the swim meet, he attempted to throw himself in front of a car. Luckily, he survived but was stuck having to move by a wheelchair. He then was miserable and obsessed with alcohol. His lack of desire proves how his perfect genes have nothing to do with his willingness to keep living and fighting his struggles.
On the other hand, Vincent was conceived without the help of genetic selection. Because of this, he was born in-valid and with some disorders, with a life span of 30.2 years. These problems prevented him from getting into Gattaca and pursuing his dream of going to space. He had big hopes and would not ever give up until he reached his goal, Jerome helped him by sharing his DNA with him. Vincent never allowed his brother to discourage him, especially he did not let his disorders interfere with his dreams. Therefore, his spirit was stronger than his genes, which allowed him to overcome his traumas.
In conclusion, Vincent’s and Jerome’s spirits overpowered their genetic perfections and imperfections. Just because Vincent was in-valid, it does not mean he can’t pursue his dreams and since Jerome is “perfect” , it does not mean he’ll live the ideal life. Clearly, this proves how the human spirit will always be able to overpower your imperfections.
