Blogpost 10

This is a brassica oleracea flower, its petals are yellow.
Inside of it is where all the reproduction happens.
This is the male part of the flower, known as the stamen. It has
a filament coming up from the base of the flower. At the
tip of each filament is an anther, where
meiosis takes place, producing pollen grains. It produces
 male haploid gametophytes.
This is the female part of the flower known as carpel, it is the
innermost floral part. It consists a stalk called a style. It has a sticky tip called stigma, in the sticky tip is where the pollen grain gets stuck.
Further in the dissection, we are exposed nothing left but the ovary.
The ovary is the green tube and in it there are small green ovules.

This is a picture of the whole Brassica olereacea flower from one of the plants in the garden.  This type of flower goes through meiosis for reproduction. Not every plant goes through meiosis but this particular flower does. Meiosis is the process f which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through the separation of homologs chromosomes in a diploid cell.
This image shows the anthers. An anther is the flower structure where the haploid male gametophytes are being produced. Anthers are at the tip of each filament. A filament is a long thin stalk that helps support the anther. An anther is an oval sac where meiosis takes place.
In this image the carpel was cut in half. The little circles inside are called ovules. An ovule is a structure in the seed cones where the female gametophytes are developed. These are unfertilized eggs waiting for meiosis to begin so that the flower reproduces.
Here is the carpel of the flower.  The carpel is the innermost part of the entire flower that produces the female gametophytes. Carpels are also known as pistils. Each carpel forms an ovary which contains one or even more ovules where the female gametophytes are made.

Who Wants to Live a Million Years: Analysis of a Natural Selection Simulation

1. For me to win in the game, it took me about 14 times. It was difficult to get the species all the necessary phenotype combinations. After getting a great combination, I won the game.
2.At first I would only make combinations of all furry species or all tall species, this clearly did not seem to work out. After, I made a combination of long legs, fur coat, and other necessary traits for the species to survive and it finally lived for a million years. All of the traits and phenotypes made the species able to survive and not die too soon.
3.The species would be affected by genetic drift because when a type of genetic drift occurs, the species start to die. Just like in the game when it was cold and the species did not have a fur coat they started to die.
4. Most of the tall species were more dominant than the short ones with a lot of fur. The ones that were short, fat, and furry died when they got overheated.
5. In hot conditions, the species that are less fat and have no fur will survive. During the cold, the stout and furry species survived better. When there was a predator, the species with long legs survived since they could run away. When the plants started to grow tall, the species with long legs seemed to survived because they could reach the plants.
6.I would improve this simulation to represent natural selection and biological evolution by having more specific traits and combinations to adapt to the environment. Also,  I would make the evolution of the species more clear and specific. Lastly, I'd get the species better traits to adapt to the global warming environment.

2. I believe there is so much variability in the domestic forms of Brassica Oleracea because they are all from a historical group of Crucifera , a four petalled flower. Some are curly-leafed, smooth-leafed, and some are wild type, but they are all the same genus or species. Artificial selection requires a farmer to to determine which individuals possess the key characteristics to pass on to the next generation.  The cultivars of B. oleracea are grouped by developmental form into seven major cultivar groups.

The Brassica oleracea all have the same texture of its stem and leafs. I think this because they are practically from the same ancestors hence the same name brand of the packages that they come from.

GATTACA Essay

In the movie GATTACA directed by Andrew Niccol made in 2007 is about an “in-valid” young man,Vincent, who tries to change many major things about him to become “valid” to live his long dream of going into space.

There is one quote in the beginning of the movie that I believed had a lot of meaning behind it. “This child is still you, simply the best of you. You could conceive naturally a thousand times and never get the same results” said the Genetic counselor (GATTACA Niccol). This quote means that one can continue to keep trying for another child but each child will come out differently. One’s child will not come out perfectly without health problems or genetic features. No matter what the child still has the parents genetic identity and that can not be changed.

Through out the film there were numerous recurring symbols such as glass/water also being an obstacle that Vincent must face. For example, Vincent wears glasses due to the fact that he’s near cited. His glasses is one way to know that he is “in-valid” because one who is “valid” is far cited. Moving on, he must wear contacts to look just like Jerome’s eyes.
Vincent needs almost everything from Jerome, such as: urine samples, blood, fingerprints, and contacts to be “valid”. Both Jerome and Vincent get a significant amount of benefits out of their relationship. Vincent gets what he needs to be able to go to space and Jerome gets the reputation of it. Since Jerome can not walk or have the heart to not give up, he will be one to be known for going into space.

I would like to take the opportunity to select special traits for my child, but I would be happy either way my child would turn out. Even if my child had traits I did not chose I would accept my child no matter what.

Concluding, this movie has made me change my perspective on people how some people do not feel accepted and try to change themselves. If I lived in a world like Jerome and Vincent it would be very difficult to live a certain life like they do.

Who Wants to Live a Million Years:Analysis of a Natural Selection Stimulation

It took me twelve generations to finally win one game. It took this long because I had to chose one of each species selection that has different features. I think this means that species have to have the best genetics and features to survive certain obstacles to survive up to a million years.

I selected the tall red headed species, short species with stripes, and the short fat species with lots of fur.  I believe this helped me win because they reproduced with one another and made one whole new species that can survive.

Yes, I believe the species would be greatly affected by genetic drift. When some type of genetic drift happens, most of the population of the species dies off. For example, when it is freezing cold and there is a species that has not fat and fur, it will most likely die off.

The tall species seemed to be more dominant and the short species with no fur seemed recessive. I could tell because most of the species after reproducing turned out tall. This proves that the tall species is recessive.

During cold conditions short, fat, and furry species best survives. Species with no fur will survive hot conditions. When there is a new predator on scene species with long legs and tall height will survive the invasion. Species with tall legs and long necks will be able to survive due to tal new plant resources.

To improve natural selection and biological evolution the should be no pollution and poaching and stop global warming.

GATTACA Essay

Anyone and everyone has the ability to overcome great adversity. There are no genes in the human spirit. In the movie Gattaca, we get to see the differences between Vincent and Jerome, they’re unique in the way they see life and the future. Jerome is genetically engineered. he was perfect and met all the requirements to get into Gattaca. Sadly, there were some obstacles he couldn’t emotionally overcome, he dealt with addiction to alcohol, suffered from depression, and lacked desire. On the other hand, Vincent had disabilities which affected his life choices, but he was still willing to chase his dreams.
Particularly, Jerome was genetically engineered to be the perfect person. He could have technically done anything he wanted to, but he was upset over getting second place at a swim meet, this insecurity made him depressed. Due to that bad experience in the swim meet, he attempted to throw himself in front of a car. Luckily, he survived but was stuck having to move by a wheelchair. He then was miserable and obsessed with alcohol. His lack of desire proves how his perfect genes have nothing to do with his willingness to keep living and fighting his struggles.
On the other hand, Vincent was conceived without the help of genetic selection. Because of this, he was born in-valid and with some disorders, with a life span of 30.2 years. These problems prevented him from getting into Gattaca and pursuing his dream of going to space. He had big hopes and would not ever give up until he reached his goal, Jerome helped him by sharing his DNA with him. Vincent never allowed his brother to discourage him, especially he did not let his disorders interfere with his dreams. Therefore, his spirit was stronger than his genes, which allowed him to overcome his traumas.
In conclusion, Vincent’s and Jerome’s spirits overpowered their genetic perfections and imperfections. Just because Vincent was in-valid, it does not mean he can’t pursue his dreams and since Jerome is “perfect” , it does not mean he’ll live the ideal life. Clearly, this proves how the human spirit will always be able to overpower your imperfections.

Gisselle Munoz's seed story blog post #8

Gisselle has learned that without the help of humans and nitrate plants wouldn't have grown very well. She was amazed by the fact that we had to cut the grass so that the plant could properly grow. She laughed because she thought the plants were being suffocated in the zip lock bag when it was actually germinating. She thought about the fact that plants wouldn't grow or exist if humans didn't take care of it. She realized in the garden that the plants went through a long process to sprout.

Ikenna's Seed Story

Ikenna learned that how nitrogen and nitrate how they positively affect plants and how plants affect humans on Earth. He was surprised how much that plants grew over a little amount of time and the weather conditions. Ikenna laughed about was when he thought that the plants would be suffocated by the zip lock bag when we first started breeding the seeds.  Ikenna paused and thought a little deeper of how some humans are ignorant about plants.

Ikenna Kuba's Seed Story

Ikenna has learned about the nitrogen cycle and how it affects the garden and plants growing.  Something that amazed him was how fast the cauliflower grew and it ended up sprouting really well and neat. He laughed when the team worked together and discussed how our plants weren't growing at first when they were in the ziploc bags. The fact that people are ignorant to how important the plants are not only to us humans, but to the environment made him think how deep and necessary Brassica Oleracea plants are. He wants to know more about the history of cauliflowers, like where they were first planted.

One of a Kind: The Wonders of Biodiversity Blog #7

My group and I are growing the Brassica Cauliflower Oleracea. Kohlrabi and Chinese Kale are native to  southern and western Europe. I can tell from the organisms that my plant descends from things similar to brocolli, kale, and chard. The offsprings will grow as large as the parent plants or even larger from the results of the parent plants. The plant's offspring will pass its genetic information on to the next generation through mitosis. Do punnet squares can show traits of what the offspring may have. The plants offsprinng will look alie to the parents plants. The Brassica oleracea plants look similar because they may have the same ancestor plants and they may look different because they could have had different ancestors. The different forms come to be from just one ancestral species by just the traits and transferring on down the road to my baby plant now.

One of a Kind: The wonders of Diversity

I am experimenting with cauliflower. From looking at the plant, I can tell that its parent plants must have been white cauliflowers. Since orange and purple cauliflower have more nutrients and vitamins, I can tell that my plant's parents did not have all the extra vitamins and healthful nutrients. Looking at my plant, I predict the baby plants grown from the cauliflower's seeds will be white as well. I think my plant's offspring might look exactly the same or slightly different, considering all the other Brassica Oleracea being grown by the cauliflower may affect it. They all look different because they have different parent plants and genes or alleles. The cauliflower is in the Botrytis group.

ikenna kubas blog post #7

I am experimenting on the Brassica Olercea. Brassica Olercea is the species of plant that include many common foods as cultivars, including cabbage, brocoil, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, collard green. It is native to coastal southern and Western Europe. It's tolerance of salt and lime and it's intolerance of competition from other plants typically restricts its natural occurrence to limestone sea cliffs, like the chalk cliffs on both sides of the English channel. Through a process called mitosis, plants can divide their cells and produce their younger ones. Through linnet squares you can tell how it's pares re genotype the baby plant was. Chromosomes from the parent plant is passed on to the baby plants. It could pass its genetic information through its chromosomes, DNA and genes. It's offspring will look just like it because it's the same chromosomes passed to it. The plants might look different because of their amount of nutrient or because they have the same chromosomes but are arranged differently.

1. Abiotic factors: Animals and pests eat the plants.
Biotic factors: Wind, temperature and weather.
2. The plants compete with other plants for nutrients.
3. Whoever gets the most nutrient wins and who doesn't loses, the amount could be complicated.
4. digestion
5. they are a lot of plants and they all fight for nutrition

1. The leaves, stem and branches are grown
2. Plants need water to grow.
3. Plants use carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.
4. Plants use the nitrate from nitrogen.

#6: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Plants need to grow and to grow they need food, plants produce their own food using a method known as photosynthesis. Cells reproduce by a method called mitosis (cell division), cells reproduce by dividing into smaller particles, which later grow to a cell. Cells convert biomolecules into usable energy for powering cell activities this process is called respiration.

#5: Living or Not

My plant has grown from a limpy seed to a strong greeny cauliflower . The size has grown from 3 centimeters and now its 6 inches tall. The leaves are larger and have survived through the rain storms and cold mornings and night.
